Kitchener Public Library hosts free evening session on data privacy and e-waste reduction
Do you know where your data goes when you retire an old phone, laptop, or tablet? On Thursday, April 30, 2026, the Kitchener Public Library is teaming up with ObserIQ to help residents answer that question and take action.
The free event, titled Digital Legacy and Circular Tech, runs from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in Meeting Room C at the Central Library, located at 85 Queen Street North in downtown Kitchener.
In an era where AI systems are hungrier than ever for personal data, knowing how to properly erase information from old devices has become a basic digital life skill. The session will walk attendees through practical methods for safely wiping data from devices they no longer use, as well as how to securely recycle that hardware to reduce electronic waste and lower the risk of identity theft.
The program is presented in partnership with ObserIQ, an organization focused on digital responsibility and circular technology practices.
The event is geared toward adults, seniors, and anyone interested in digital literacy or computer and technology topics. Whether you have a drawer full of old phones you've been meaning to deal with, or you simply want to understand what happens to your data after a device leaves your hands, the session offers approachable, actionable guidance.
Registration is required and can be completed online using your library credentials, by phone during library opening hours, or in person at your nearest library branch. Library members can also reset their password or sign up for a membership through the library's website if needed.
