The grandparent scam is the most emotionally devastating fraud. One simple tactic-a secret family password-neutralizes it permanently.
The call comes at 2am. A panicked voice says: "Grandma, it's me. I'm in jail. I need bail money. Please don't tell Mom and Dad." The voice sounds just enough like your grandchild. The panic sounds real. The urgency is overwhelming.
This is the grandparent scam. It's one of the most emotionally damaging frauds in Canada. Victims lose money, but the deeper harm is shame, broken trust, and lasting fear.
Pick a secret word that only your family knows - a pet's name, a favourite food, or a made-up word. If someone calls saying they're a family member in trouble, ask for that word. If they can't give it, hang up.
The safe word removes the scammer's most powerful weapon: uncertainty. Without it, the victim is left wondering "What if it really is my grandchild?" With it, the answer is instant and definitive.
This takes five minutes to set up and lasts a lifetime. In our Stop the Rush workshops, we walk attendees through the setup process and help them choose a word before they leave the room.
